Basic Commerce and Industries, Inc. (BCI) expects an opening for a human factors engineering (HFE) position in summer 2025. Anticipated areas of work include surface ship design evaluations and development and modification of bridge systems.
Job Location: Dahlgren, VA or Stafford, VA
Job Start Date: Summer 2025
Shift: Days~ 0800- 1600
Experience Required: A master's degree in human factors engineering or a related field (e.g., industrial engineering or experimental psychology) or a relevant Bachelor's degree with additional professional experience is required. Practical experience in workspace evaluation, human engineering design standards, and human figure modeling is preferred. Candidates should have strong communication skills, be capable of taking the initiative in identifying and solving problems, and be able to work effectively in multi-disciplinary teams. Experience in at least one of the following specific areas is preferred: ergonomic and anthropometric evaluations; layout and arrangement evaluations of shipboard spaces or other work environments; or user-centered human-computer interface (HCI) design processes.
Description of Duties: Duties will vary based on the mix of assigned projects, but may include the following. Perform lab-based and shipboard human factors assessments of developmental and fielded ship systems. Perform task analyses to understand, document, and prioritize the interaction requirements of shipboard personnel with available equipment and systems and with other personnel. Employ design and human modeling software to evaluate the accessibility and suitability of compartment and equipment arrangements and to assess compliance with human engineering design standards. Develop design approach documentation for the operational and maintenance characteristics of shipboard spaces to verify their effectiveness, efficiency, and suitability.
Travel Requirements (if any): Periodic visits to equipment developer sites, integration or test facilities, and user events may be required, which may require a travel rate between 10% and 20%.
Applicants must be US citizens. A current Secret or Top Secret DoD security clearance is strongly desired. Applicants will be subjected to a security investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information.
